Reading books with my son (a preschooler) is a part of our daily routine. We love looking at the pictures and relating them to the story. We sometimes re-enact them and take the story further in our own way.
There is no doubt about how important books are as a part of a child’s development and they are a lot of fun too.
How does reading books with young children help them?
These are so many positive things I have noticed in my child as we continue our reading routine for more than 3 years now. Having researched on benefits of reading books with your kid, below are a few I strongly agree with:
- It develops imagination and thinking skills
- It helps your child identify words quickly
- Reading books frequentlyl helps your kid start reading early
- It helps build a strong vocabulary
- It is a good way to explain complicated topics – the death of a close one, handling emotions, etc.
- It can be used to talk about new experiences like potty training, the first day of school, dentist appointment etc.
- It helps increase knowledge of your own and other cultures – gives an accepting approach towards people from various stages of life, backgrounds
- Gaining knowledge helps build confidence
- Starting to read at a young age builds a lifelong habit
